Salesforce.com to buy cloud computing services company

Salesforce.com has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Model Metrics, a cloud computing consulting and services company, with practices in the areas of mobile computing and social technologies, it said Monday.

The financial terms of the proposed acquisition were not disclosed. Salesforce.com said it expected to close the transaction in its fiscal fourth quarter ending Jan. 31, subject to customary closing conditions.

Model Metrics in Chicago has more than 500 customers, and has completed more than 1,000 Salesforce.com deployments for companies of all sizes.

The company said earlier this month that 80% of its customers include smartphone and tablet adoption plans in their cloud deployments. The company’s mobile projects have as a result increased by nearly six times in 2011, it added.

Model Metrics has been expanding its mobile practice, and introduced new service offerings and support for additional development technologies and mobile device platforms. It has developed enterprise-ready mobile applications that run on iPhone, iPad, and a number of Android devices, and provide offline access to Salesforce.com data.

Salesforce.com said that the Model Metrics team will join its strategic services organization, to add mobile and social capabilities.

Salesforce.com said in May that it had completed the acquisition of Radian6, a social media monitoring platform that it plans to integrate with its products, to create a link between public conversations and Chatter, the company’s corporate social network. In September, it acquired Assistly which helps businesses set up customer-service help desks built for the cloud.
