Sony PlayStation phone to be launched at MWC

Sony Ericsson will officially unveil its highly anticipated ‘PlayStation phone’ at Mobile World Congress this year.

The Xperia Play features a 4in (854×480) display and a 1GHz processor, and runs Google’s Android version 2.3, which is also known as Gingerbread. Rather than a keyboard, the handset features a slide-out gamepad.

The official announcement about the launch, which will take place at 6pm on Sunday February 13, was made on Sony Ericsson’s Facebook page and uses the tag line ‘Android is ready to play’ as well as calling the handset a “gamechanger”.

In December, a report in Japan’s Asahi Shimbun revealed the company admitted it was planning to launch a device that blends the features of a PlayStation Portable and mobile phone in spring of 2011.

However, prior to this the web had been rife with speculation about a PlayStation phone. In a report on the Wall Street Journal website, Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg hinted that that the mobile-phone maker was working with Sony to build a smartphone with a slide-out controller to play games.
