Time of opportunity is now, says Dell

The call comes at a time when CIOs and IT managers in the region have been called upon to maximise their IT infrastructure investments and tighten their IT budgets during these tough times when IT hardware and software sales have remained flat. In addition, organisations in the region are grappling to understand the exact utilisation levels of their server and datacentre environments.

Delivering a paper to more than 120 top CIOs, IT managers and directors entitled “Compute More/Consume Less” at the 2009 IDC CIO summit in Dubai, Dr Albert Esser, VP of Power and Infrastructure at Dell, said employing best practices will help organisations to unlock their “hidden” datacentres and have an entire view of systems, hardware and applications utilisation within their IT infrastructure.

Dr Esser said by adopting a more holistic view of the existing IT infrastructure and employing best practices for power and thermal efficiency, CIOs will be in a greater position to do more with IT without having to invest into expensive technologies.

He said as virtualisation becomes widely adopted in today’s enterprise environment, CIOs that don’t virtualise their datacentres and server environments will find it tough now and in the future as the operational costs of managing such environments will continue to balloon.

He said although most organisations have had to put on hold some of the less important IT projects, an increasing number of businesses is looking to IT to help them weather the global recession. “We are seeing more opportunity in these gloomy times,” he said. “The tough times present opportunities for businesses to innovate and prepared for the upturn.”

John Coulston, Head of Marketing at Dell Middle East agrees and said organisations in the Middle East region have continued to invest in big IT projects despite the prevailing tough economic conditions. “In the region we are seeing Government IT projects in countries such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the UAE continuing,” he said.

This is a positive development as Governments sector across the GCC region are one of the biggest IT spenders.
