Apple aims to boost satellite capabilities

According to recent reports, Apple is hard at work to boost the satellite capabilities of the iPhone, in a move designed to increase the features available to users when they are not able to connect via traditional mobile networks.

Bloomberg reported Apple is working on a range of initiatives including an API allowing developers to support satellite-based connectivity within their own apps. Apple Maps could also get a satellite upgrade, with plans to allow users to use navigation without the need for a mobile or Wi-Fi signal.

While the iPhone currently supports basic messaging through satellite, the planned upgrades could include the capability to send photos. Bloomberg added the company is working on allowing users to utilise satellite connectivity even if their phone isn’t pointed directly at the sky.

A separate report from The Information indicated 5G networks could be improved with extra coverage by allowing them to also connect to satellite.

Apple has a long-term contract with Globalstar for its satellite capabilities, agreeing a deal worth $1.1 billion with the provider in 2024. To support its planned upgrades, Apple is apparently willing to help finance infrastructure upgrades necessary from Globalstar.

In terms of consumers, basic upgrades around satellite would be free, but there would be a cost for more advanced features.
