SK Hynix considers a dedicated U.S. AI strategy hub

SK Hynix, a South Korean supplier of RAM and flash memory chips, is considering setting up a dedicated US-based unit focused on AI investment.

This move is part of a concentrated effort to speed up decision making and strengthen expertise across their AI portfolio.

In a regulatory filing, Woo-Hyun Kim, head of finance at SK Hynix, confirmed the chipmaker is “reviewing various options, including establishing a corporation for AI investment” and will provide an update upon confirmation or within one month.

According to Maeil Business Newspaper, the US based subsidiary could absorb as much as KRW10 trillion (around $7 billion) in overseas AI-related investment assets currently held by SK Group affiliates. Among the holdings expected to be transferred is SK Innovation’s stake in TerraPower, a US-based nuclear company founded by Bill Gates.

The new unit would act as a strategic hub across the broader AI ecosystem, spanning semiconductors, AI infrastructure, energy, software and data centres. It would likely operate as a control tower for overseas AI-related investments rather than running operating businesses directly, added the report.

Local news outlet ChosunBiz added the company is also considering adding the AI investment function to its existing SK Hynix America operations in Silicon Valley, consolidating its AI investments that have so far been spread across affiliates including SK Telecom and SK Square.
