WBA releases security guidelines for private 5G

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) recently unveiled a unified framework focused on possible improvements in the security of private 5G networks for enterprises.

At heart, these guidelines are intended to help companies integrate private 5G with existing IT and Wi-Fi infrastructure. The WBA is also concerned with bolstering protections against evolving cybersecurity threats, stating dangers are growing as digital transformations broaden the attack plane.

The WBA’s framework involves a “converged zero-trust model” which uses “open standards and shared policies”. The group describes its approach in Enterprise Security for Private 5G Networks, a report offering guidance on how businesses can align wired and wireless security policies.

WBA president and CEO Tiago Rodrigues said private 5G is “the next frontier of enterprise connectivity” and combining security measures for the wireless technology with Wi-Fi protections would enable the industry to “accelerate digital transformation without compromising resilience or interoperability”.

The group highlighted potential benefits of its approach for enterprises; network operators and system integrators; technology vendors; and regulators.

It explained combining private 5G with Wi-Fi is a desirable mix in terms of providing reliable connectivity. The report outlines pxGrid, a protocol offering secure two-way data exchange between the fixed and wireless networks, along with multi-access edge computing and AI analytics to provide “real-time anomaly detection” and automated responses to danger.

It explained publishing the report is the initial move for its plan, with a second phase set to advance operational security intelligence in converged networks through centralised monitoring, security information and event management integration, anomaly detection using AI and machine learning, and coordination of security operation centre tasks.
