Apple unveils next-gen Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, and suite of child safety features

WWDC26 showcases Apple’s most ambitious software update yet, introducing Siri AI, advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, redesigned parental controls, and major performance enhancements across its ecosystem.

Apple has unveiled a sweeping set of software innovations at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC26), introducing the next generation of Apple Intelligence, an all-new Siri AI, and a comprehensive suite of child safety features aimed at helping families navigate the digital world more safely and confidently. The announcements mark one of Apple’s most significant software updates in recent years, spanning iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and other devices.

At the heart of the announcement is Apple Intelligence, Apple’s next-generation artificial intelligence platform built on a privacy-first architecture. Designed to integrate deeply into Apple’s ecosystem, the technology introduces smarter and more personalised experiences across applications including Photos, Safari, Mail, Messages, Calendar, Home, and Shortcuts. Apple said the new capabilities are powered by advanced foundation models running both on-device and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, ensuring user data remains protected.

A major highlight is the introduction of Siri AI, a complete reimagining of Apple’s digital assistant. Unlike previous versions, Siri AI combines conversational intelligence, personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, and broad web knowledge. Users can ask Siri AI to retrieve information from emails, messages, photos, and documents, while also performing actions across applications. Siri AI can answer questions about content displayed on screen, search the web for up-to-date information, and maintain contextual conversations across Apple devices through a dedicated Siri app that synchronises conversation history via iCloud.

Apple Intelligence also introduces significant enhancements to creative workflows. The Photos app gains powerful AI-assisted editing tools, including Spatial Reframing, which allows users to adjust image perspectives after a photograph has been taken.

New image extension capabilities intelligently fill missing areas when resizing or reframing photos, while upgraded Clean Up functionality improves object removal and scene restoration. Generated and AI-edited images include hidden SynthID watermarks to promote transparency.

Safari receives several intelligent upgrades, including automatic organisation of browser tabs into topic-based collections, intelligent monitoring of web pages for product restocks or price changes, and the ability to create custom browser extensions using natural language descriptions. Apple’s Passwords application can now automatically upgrade weak credentials to stronger alternatives by securely navigating websites on behalf of users.

Alongside its AI announcements, Apple introduced one of its most extensive child safety initiatives to date. The company is enhancing parental controls through a redesigned Screen Time experience and a range of new features designed to help parents manage what children can see, who they can communicate with, and how much time they spend using digital devices.

The foundation of these protections remains the Child Account system, which enables age-appropriate safeguards such as web content filtering, media restrictions, and App Store protections. Parents setting up devices for children can now choose a curated set of approved applications and gradually expand access over time. New tools such as Ask to Browse extend parental oversight beyond app downloads, requiring parental approval before children can access new websites in Safari.

Communication controls have also been strengthened. Parents can approve new contacts before children communicate through Messages, FaceTime, or Phone. Communication Safety, which already detects and blurs nudity, will now also intervene when violent or graphic content is detected in images and videos shared with minors.

To encourage healthier digital habits, Apple is introducing Time Allowances, allowing parents to establish daily limits across categories such as Entertainment, Social Media, and Gaming. The feature incorporates age-based recommendations informed by clinical and child development research. New scheduling controls enable parents to determine which apps are accessible during different times of the day, helping children remain focused during school hours or family activities.

Screen Time itself has been redesigned to provide a clearer overview of children’s device usage patterns, allowing parents to make real-time adjustments with a single tap. Apple says the updated experience is intended to simplify digital parenting while preserving flexibility for individual family needs.

Beyond AI and child safety, Apple announced a wide range of platform enhancements. Software performance improvements include faster app launches, quicker photo processing, improved AirDrop transfers, more seamless network transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, and significant gains in external storage performance on iPad. Additional updates span health tracking, spatial computing, AirPods personalisation, Apple Maps, Apple Watch functionality, and iCloud photo sharing.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, described the announcements as a major step forward in Apple’s vision of delivering intelligent, privacy-focused experiences across its ecosystem. The company believes the combination of advanced AI capabilities and expanded parental controls reflects a growing need for technology that is both powerful and responsible.

The new software features are currently available for developer testing and will roll out through public beta programmes before becoming generally available later this year with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27. Siri AI will initially launch in beta for English-language users on supported devices, with additional languages to follow.
