UAE TRA warns public on hoax regarding VPN use

The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has denied rumours that residents will face a 5,000 dirham fine for using a VPN.

A hoax text message, which called for residents to report to their nearest police station to pay the fine, was circulated earlier this week, before being flagged on Twitter to the authorities.

Etisalat responded to concerned recipients of the message saying it had not been sent by them, and the TRA has since urged the public not to circulate the message.
