Ericsson is set to be a significant influence on the development of physical AI and 6G in South Korea after being chosen for the nation’s Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure Demonstration Project.
The vendor’s position as a main consortium partner essentially involves contributing its technologies to the creation of a pilot AI-RAN. Ericsson highlighted specialities in standalone 5G and intelligent network automation among the elements it brings to the table.
It stated a second phase in the project would involve putting the AI-RAN set-up through its paces in a logistics setting at the manufacturing facility of vehicle maker KG Mobility in the city of Pyeongtaek.
Sibel Tombaz, head of Customer Unit Korea, said Ericsson’s selection was aided by a longstanding relationship with SK Telecom (SKT), which is heading one of two Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure Demonstration Project consortiums. Counterpart KT is overseeing the second.
Ericsson explained it would provide “an end-to-end network foundation” which can “connect, coordinate and continuously optimise intelligent machines and autonomous industrial operations”.
The vendor noted SKT is working to conduct pilots of physical AI services in 2027. Ericsson is joining a consortium which is to also comprise “network, AI, robotics and industrial partners”.
It explained AI-RAN “can help distribute computation” across various elements needed in physical use cases including devices, “edge infrastructure and data centres”.
The work is ultimately expected to help lay the groundwork for future 6G development and deployment, Ericsson explained.
