Google DeepMind develops new AI research lab in Singapore

In order to better work with government, businesses, civil society and academic institutions across Asia Pacific, Google DeepMind has opened a new AI research laboratory in Singapore.

COO Lila Ibrahim explained in a post on its website the investment adds to Google’s commitment to the Asia Pacific ecosystem, with the AI unit more than doubling its team in the region over the past year.

Ibrahim said the lab builds on its efforts “to pioneer foundational research in linguistic and cultural inclusivity” for Asia Pacific, advance Gemini’s core capabilities and apply the latest models across Google products. “We are focused on understanding how our technologies can be best built to serve the diverse needs of the Asia Pacific region”.

Giving an example of the impact its teams and partners are creating by applying Google technologies, she highlighted a multidisciplinary research team at Singapore’s Agency of Science, Technology and Research and the National Neuroscience Institute used AlphaFold to pioneer a breakthrough in understanding Parkinson’s disease.

DeepMind also worked with GovTech, the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore and the Infocomm Media Development Authority to create an AI agent sandbox to test autonomous systems intended to improve public sector efficiency and service delivery.
