Stargate data centre initiative raises over $400 billion

The coalition of OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank Group have increased their commitment in the Stargate project to over $400 billion over the next three years and have go on to detail plans to build five new AI data centres in the US.

Three data centres, previously announced by OpenAI and Oracle, will be in Texas, New Mexico and an undisclosed site in the midwest, with two additional sites to be built by OpenAI and SoftBank Group in Ohio and Texas.

A joint statement noted the new data centre sites put it on “a clear path to securing the full $500 billion, 10GW commitment announced in January by the end of 2025, ahead of schedule”.

The companies added the five sites, along with Stargate’s flagship site in Texas and ongoing projects with CoreWeave, will have a total planned capacity of nearly 7 gigawatts.

In January, US President Donald Trump laid out plans for a joint venture with the three technology giants to build AI infrastructure in the states, with initial plans to spend up to $500 billion.
