Juniper Research predicts cellular IoT windfall in 2030

Juniper Research has predicted a substantial demand for network API-driven cellular IoT in 2030. However, the company warned of risks if the mistakes of 5G deployments are repeated in the 6G era.

The global tech strategy company expects operator cellular IoT revenue to hit $30 billion in 2030, up 74 per cent on the sum predicted for this year. Juniper Research stated growing demand for operational efficiency and automation will fuel the increase.

It encouraged operators to take innovative approaches to generating revenue from IoT connectivity while cautioning this, alone, would not be sufficient to thrive in the emerging 6G market.

“Operators will find far more success in the IoT space through usage-based billing. As we move closer to 6G, operators cannot repeat the mistakes of 5G. Connectivity alone is not enough,” Senior Research Analyst Alex Webb said.

Juniper Research is publishing a report on the sector and explained it believes network APIs are emerging as a key revenue-generating weapon in operators’ arsenal, due to the technology’s ability to provide standardised access to the infrastructure’s capabilities on demand.

These network capabilities open the way to offer usage-based billing rather than set monthly fees, though Juniper Research cautioned operators should adopt approaches making it easy for enterprises to access such capabilities.

Offering standards-based network APIs through developer portals, for example, would enable enterprises to “easily deploy network applications without needing deep telecom experience”.
