SK Telecom looks to the future with 6G

SK Telecom (SKT) recently outlined its long-term 6G roadmap with the main goal of setting up an AI-native network evolution strategy as the industry prepares for new commercial deployments in 2030.

In a new study, the operator detailed plans to reshape its network architecture around AI, zero trust security and cloud-native design across radio, core and transport networks. The AI-powered evolution aims to improve operational efficiency, customer experience and network monetisation.

SKT’s 6G blueprint rests on two parallel priorities it described as “AI for Network” and “Network for AI”. The first focuses on embedding AI into network operations, using real-time data analysis and automated decision-making to enable self-optimising networks. The second aims to optimise networks to better support emerging AI-driven services, such as humanoid robots and satellite communications.

Under the framework, the operator plans to upgrade its RAN through AI-based autonomous optimisation, increase automation across its core and transport networks by embedding AI in cloud-native systems, and expand its network data platform to serve as the backbone for new AI-powered services.

The study marks the latest in a series of 6G whitepapers launched in 2023, when SKT outlined early standardisation requirements and AI-driven infrastructure.

Uncertainties

Yu Takki, head of network technology at SKT, said: “Despite uncertainties in the 6G era, we will continue to create new growth opportunities by leading the evolution of future communication infrastructure over the next decade”, by prioritising “AI, virtualisation, openness, and zero trust security”.

The operator reiterated its work to influence global standards, stating it remains active in organisations including 3GPP, ITU and the O-RAN Alliance, and recently secured a board seat at the AI-RAN Alliance.

SKT also revealed it will demonstrate related technologies such as AI agents for networks, AI-RAN and integrated sensing technologies at MWC26 Barcelona.
