Telefonica seeks to boost municipal services with smart systems

In the Spanish region of Cadiz, Telefonica’s digital business unit has entered into a new water meter deal by assisting the local municipal service provider in boosting efficiency by swapping to smart systems.

More than 4,000 meters are involved in the Telefonica Tech project with Aguas de Cadiz, an initiative which is part of a government sustainability programme.

NB-IoT-compatible meters manufactured by Contazara are being deployed to provide consumption data to a remote data processing and management platform. Telefonica Tech noted the technology consumes little data and offers good connectivity, making it suitable for remote or hard-to-reach spots: the operator’s business unit highlighted dedicated rooms and basements as examples.

Along with improved consumption measurements, Telefonica Tech stated the smart meters would enable Aguas de Cadiz to detect and prevent leaks or other possible failures in its network.

“Remote reading and data analysis allow us to analyse consumption patterns and detect anomalies”, Carlos Carazo, global director of product, technology and IoT operations at Telefonica Tech said.

The water company’s president, Jose Manuel Cossi, said pilot-level deployments of the smart meter upgrade are to occur in specific neighbourhoods, “homeowners associations and some public services” including park and garden maintenance. Aguas de Cadiz would be able to “handle the large volume of data from both sensor devices and remote management meters” due to the deployment, he said. A broader, phased, rollout would happen after its initial forays, Cossi said.
