Robots prove an economic driver for China

Official figures recently highlighted how robots are continuing to be a major driver for China’s economy. The country is doing well in the export of labour-easing machines and making a strong showing in the industrial sector.

The government tallied the value of robots exported at CNY11.3 billion ($1.7 billion). It stated the equipment was shipped to 148 countries and regions globally, figures apparently indicating a pay-off in a Chinese drive to become a world-leader in the sector.

Cleaning robots accounted for the majority of China’s total exports at CNY7.6 billion and industrial variants amounting to CNY3.2 billion.

The government explained the sector’s exports are benefitting from a big-picture approach combining technology, solutions and services rather than single-purpose equipment, in turn establishing China as a key robot manufacturer.

Last month, the Mercator Institute for China Studies published a report stating the nation can claim to operate the world’s largest fleet of industrial robots and is working to overcome heavy reliance on Nvidia silicon and software with domestic alternatives.

It noted the robotics sector is one of several China identified as ripe for additional funding to boost its broader economic goals, though added costs remain a limiting factor.
