AWS invests in European sovereign cloud

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently developed a new sovereign cloud facility based in Germany. This facility and its accompanying sovereign cloud service are designed to help alleviate data security concerns across the entire European continent.

AWS’ sovereign cloud is a fully independent environment located entirely within the European Union (EU). The tech giant stated it is designed to meet the strict digital sovereignty, data residency and compliance requirements of European governments and regulated industries.

AWS noted its European cloud data centres are legally separate from its US operations and staffed entirely by EU‑based employees. All customer data, including billing and configurations, remain entirely within the region. More than 90 AWS services including AI, compute, storage, networking and security will be available.

The cloud company’s first data centre is now live in Brandenburg, Germany with additional facilities planned for Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal. AWS European Sovereign Cloud is backed by an investment of €7.8 billion.

Rival Google announced plans in 2025 to invest €5.5 billion in Germany from 2026 to 2029, which includes building a new state-of-the-art data centre in Dietzenbach near Frankfurt, expanding its existing Hanau data centre and enlarging office spaces in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.
