SoftBank invests in AI low-power mode for base stations

SoftBank Corp recently announced two initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from elements of its mobile network. The first of which involves deploying AI to automatically put base stations in low-power mode and second concerns a focused switch to using solar and wind energy.

The operator developed an AI system to dynamically control the sleep state of base stations to maximise power savings, targeting deploying the technology at as many as 24,000 sites across Japan.

A demonstration in Chiba prefecture reduced CO2 emissions by around a third by using renewable energy sources. It plans to expand the tests to other areas this year.

A year ago more than 90 per cent of the electricity used at its base stations came from renewable energy sources. Base stations account for more than half its total electricity usage.

In 2022, the operator broadened its commitment to reaching carbon neutrality, setting the target of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions generated across its supply chain to virtually zero by 2050.

As part of its overall net zero goal, SoftBank said it aims to source all of the electricity used in its business activities from renewable energy sources by fiscal 2030.
