Emotional manipulation, generative AI, and fragmented retail data are converging to create one of the most exploited periods in the cybercrime calendar.
Valentine’s Day may be synonymous with romance, but for cybercriminals it represents something far more calculated: opportunity.
Emotion, urgency, and the desire to impress create a perfect storm for online deception. Security experts warn that the risks now extend far beyond suspicious emails, spanning AI-generated romance personas, investment lures, malicious gift card schemes, and even manipulated e-commerce experiences. February has become one of the most strategically exploited moments in the digital calendar.
According to Ezzeldin Hussein, Regional Senior Director, Solution Engineering, META at SentinelOne, attackers are increasingly weaponising trust. “Cybercriminals are no longer relying on crude phishing emails but building believable, AI-powered personas that patiently earn trust before exploiting it”.

The financial fallout can be devastating, but the emotional damage often runs deeper and lasts longer. Organisations, he adds, must strengthen identity verification, deploy AI-driven anomaly detection, and educate users to pause and verify before acting.
The scale of the threat reflects a year-round enterprise. Romance scams have evolved into a sophisticated global industry, amplified by generative AI tools capable of producing linguistically flawless and emotionally resonant messages at scale. Investment fraud frequently follows the emotional hook, blurring the line between affection and financial exploitation.
“Romance scams are not a seasonal spike; they are a 365-day enterprise powered by increasingly accessible AI tools,” says Satnam Narang, Senior Staff Research Engineer at Tenable. Large language models from Frontier and open-source alternatives now enable scammers to industrialise deception at minimal cost, creating a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem in which emotional manipulation becomes the gateway to significant financial loss.
The evolution does not stop at persuasive text. Security researchers warn that 2026 marks the mainstream arrival of real-time deepfake romance scams. Cybersecurity awareness platform KnowBe4 is warning of a sophisticated surge in AI-enabled romance fraud.

Scammers are now deploying real-time deepfake video, AI-generated personas, and automated conversation bots across platforms such as Zoom and WhatsApp, building emotional trust over weeks or even months before introducing financial requests. According to Roger Grimes, CISO advisor at KnowBe4, romance scams have become a fully AI-enabled enterprise, with criminals creating entire fake identities supported by live face-swapping and AI voice synthesis.
The financial and psychological toll is equally alarming. Grimes observes that by the time families intervene, many victims have already lost more than $250,000 — and some continue sending money even after being shown proof of the deception. “I’ve proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the person the victim is communicating with is not who they claim to be, and never has that resulted in the victim stopping,” he says. Even in an era of flawless AI personas and convincing deepfakes, one principle remains constant: any request for money in an online romance should be treated as a decisive red flag.

Gift card fraud and spoofed retail platforms add yet another layer to the Valentine’s threat landscape. Researchers have identified phishing portals designed to drain digital balances, alongside fake e-commerce sites distributing malware under the guise of limited-time offers.
“As Valentine’s Day approaches, cybercriminals may increase their efforts to exploit the emotional vulnerability and romantic spirit that define this holiday,” warns Anton Yatsenko, Lead Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky.
“The best defence is to stick to well-known retailers, check URLs carefully, apply a security solution with advanced phishing detection and remember that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
Beyond outright scams, Valentine’s Day also exposes a subtler digital risk: misplaced trust in AI-driven retail experiences.
Valentine’s shopping is often compared to trying to read a partner’s mind—insufficient information, limited time, and pressure to get it exactly right. That challenge is increasingly relevant across the Middle East, where e-commerce is projected to reach $80.3 billion by 2029, driven by a young, digitally fluent population and rising consumer expectations. Spending now stretches beyond romantic partners to include “Galentine’s Day,” self-gifting, and even pets, intensifying the personalisation challenge for retailers.
Online stores attempt to recommend the perfect gift using browsing history, past purchases, returns data, delivery preferences, and customer service interactions. Retailers across the region are embedding artificial intelligence into recommendation engines, pricing models, and demand forecasting systems, placing AI at the centre of decision-making. Yet AI is only as effective as the data it can access.
When those signals sit in separate marketing, logistics, and customer service systems, algorithms operate on partial information. The result? Suggestions for items already returned, promotions for gifts that will not arrive by 14 February, or irrelevant categories that miss the emotional moment entirely. During peak traffic periods marked by fixed delivery deadlines and last-minute purchases, these misfires become more visible — and more frustrating.
“Valentine’s Day raises expectations,” says Seema Alidily, Regional Director at Denodo. “Retailers today are relying heavily on AI to power recommendations, pricing, and customer engagement. But AI is only as effective as the data behind it. If retailers can’t see the full customer picture in real time, even well-intended, AI-driven recommendations can feel off. Visibility is what turns both AI and analytics from guesswork into an experience that feels thoughtful and reliable.”

Christian Reilly, Field CTO EMEA at Cloudflare, reinforces the need for individual vigilance alongside organisational resilience. “Cybercriminals often use emotion-driven messages to lure users into clicking malicious links or downloading infected attachments,” he says. Consumers are advised to scrutinise unexpected emails, resist clicking hastily, and disconnect devices immediately if a suspicious link is activated. Running antivirus scans, backing up sensitive data, changing passwords, and alerting organisational security teams can significantly reduce potential damage.
February amplifies both opportunity and expectation. When data visibility breaks down or emotion clouds judgment, the consequences can be financial, operational, and deeply personal.
Trust, whether in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or love itself, should be earned — not engineered.
