OpenAI looks to develop its own AI devices

OpenAI is reportedly planning to enter the AI device market by developing its own smart speaker, smart glasses and smart lamp. This move would pit the ChatGPT maker in direct competition against Apple, Meta Platforms and Google.

The Information reported OpenAI is using a team of 200 people to develop the devices, with the smart speaker being the first to ship in February 2027. The news site stated the smart speaker could be priced between $200 and $300.

The speaker will include a camera which allows it to gather information about users and surroundings.

The smart glasses may not be widely available until 2028, added the report. In a bid to increase its revenue stream, OpenAI struck a $6.5 billion deal to buy former Apple designer Jony Ive’s AI devices start-up last year.

At the time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Altman said the merger is “formed with the mission of figuring out how to create a family of devices that would let people use AI to create all sorts of wonderful things”.

The smart glasses will compete against similar products from Apple, Google and Meta Platforms.
