OpenAI raises over $8 billion in funding

OpenAI has reported raised $8.3 billion in funding which, Financial Times stated, includes one of the largest investment sums by a single company in a start-up.

The newspaper wrote Dragoneer Investment Group is providing $2.8 billion to the round, with other investors named including Blackstone Capital Partners and TPG.

CNBC noted OpenAI’s latest investment forms part of a $40 billion fundraising bid and highlighted continued growth in the company’s annual recurring revenue, which is already well into the billion-dollar range.

The US news outlet reported paid users of OpenAI’s ChatGPT product had reached 5 million. CNBC also clarified SoftBank Group remained the overall leader of the broader fundraising effort despite Dragoneer Investment Group’s hefty move in this round.

Fortune cited an article by The New York Times stating the latest investment round was oversubscribed to the tune of five times.

Dragoneer Investment Group is establishing itself as a savvy early investor: Fortune noted it was among the first to back companies including Spotify and Uber.
