In order to provide coverage in remote areas, T-Mobile US has launched an offer enabling anyone with a compatible smartphone to send messages to emergency services over its T-satellite set-up.
The T-Mobile Text to 911 service also works for AT&T and Verizon’s customers who have a second eSIM on an unlocked device.
Text to 911 uses T-Mobile’s T-Satellite offering, which launched in July and uses Starlink’s network of 650 satellites.
T-Satellite is available for free to subscribers of T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plans. For those without premium plans, or customers of AT&T and Verizon, it is being offered for $10 per month.
In a move to perhaps win over phone subscribers from its rivals, customers with compatible devices can now enrol for free access to Text to 911.
The phones automatically connect to satellites when terrestrial signals are unavailable without requiring users to be in an open space or point their devices in a certain direction.
T-Mobile customers can add the service online or using the T-Life app and users of rival networks can sign up through a dedicated link.
Owners of iPhone 14 and later models, and certain Pixel devices can connect to emergency services provided by Apple and Google. In those instances, T-Satellite defers to device-native emergency satellite messaging services.
