Sources from The Korea Economic Daily have reported that Samsung Electronics are working on a modem chip enhanced by AI for satellite communications. It is expected that this development aligns closely with a previously reported contract with SpaceX’s Starlink team.
The chipmaker’s System LSI unit is developing an Exynos modem integrated with an AI accelerator, called a neural processing unit, the newspaper explained.
It aims to enable direct connections between low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and consumer devices.
A source told the publication discussions are “underway for Samsung to join the component supply chain” of SpaceX’s future non-terrestrial 6G network.
In a post on X, South Korea-based tech analyst Jukan noted Samsung’s relationship with Tesla is also deepening.
The carmaker’s CEO Elon Musk, who also leads SpaceX, stated on Tesla’s Q3 earnings call both Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will manufacture its next-gen AI5 chip.
Samsung’s foundry business in July lined up a KRW22.8 trillion ($15.9 billion) contract to supply chips to Tesla.
