Industry association 5G Americas’ board of governors have approved a formal plan to dissolve the organisation, with the act scheduled for 27 February 2026.
The association began as 3G Americas in 2003 and changed its name as mobile technology evolved, adopting the 5G moniker in 2016.
AT&T, Cisco, Ericsson, Mavenir, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung and Airspan are among its members.
In a statement, the trade organisation highlighted its contribution to 5G development over the past decade, asserting a key role in “the continued growth of the wireless ecosystem throughout the Western Hemisphere”.
It added “the board determined that this is the appropriate time to conclude the association’s work, reflecting the continued evolution of the wireless cellular industry”.
The board of governors includes Yigal Elbaz, SVP of technology and network services and network CTO with AT&T; Rob Soni, VP of RAN engineering, AT&T; Bob Everson, senior director of 5G architecture, Cisco; and Mavenir CEO and president Pardeep Kohli.
5G Americas president Viet Nguyen told Mobile World Live the move “is a strategic decision reflecting the organisation’s mission and timing”. He said 5G Americas helped guide the transition from 4G, supported 5G-Advanced and contributed to early discussions shaping 6G. “Today, the wireless ecosystem is strong, commercially mature and globally competitive”, he said.
