In an effort to make it harder for criminals to target smart devices, Google has deployed an expanded set of Android anti-theft features. The updates build on measures including Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock introduced in 2024.
Users of devices running Android 16 or higher now have more control over a Failed Authentication Lock feature, which automatically locks a device after several failed login attempts.
A dedicated on-off toggle switch in the device’s settings gives user more control over their security.
Google is also offering stronger protection against a thief trying to guess unlock PINs, patterns or passwords by increasing the lockout time after failed attempts. Identical incorrect guesses no longer count toward users retry limits to ensure they are not locked out by mistake.
The Identity Check function launched in 2025 for Android 15 and higher now covers all features and apps using Android’s Biometric Prompt, including banking apps and Google Password Manager.
Remote Lock, a tool which allows users to lock lost or stolen device from any web browser, now includes an optional security question for an extra layer of verification.
For new Android devices activated in Brazil, two of Android’s key theft protection features are now enabled by default.
The Theft Protection Lock uses on-device AI to sense motion during snatch and grab attempts and Remote Lock is to be on automatically and accessible from a web browser.
