U.S. looks to license Nvidia H200 chips to China

Recent reports indicate that the U.S. government has increased their efforts to secure licence applications for Nvidia to ship its H200 chips to China, but the company’s CFO went on to state that there was no timetable for approval.

Reuters reported Nvidia CFO Colette Kriss told a JP Morgan analyst at CES 2026 on the 6th January the company is seeing strong demand for the chips from China-based companies following US President Donald Trump reversal of a ban in December.

“We’re going to wait and see what happens,” Kress said of the applications, according to the news agency.

Under the new arrangement, sales of the units to the country would be subject to a 25 per cent levy by US authorities.

Alibaba and TikTok-parent ByteDance are apparently among those keen to place large orders for the chips, but government officials in China have yet to approve the purchase of the chips by domestic companies.

Financial Times previously reported access to the chips were likely to be limited by authorities in Beijing as officials sought to pressure companies into using domestic alternatives.
