Qualcomm to invest in next-gen robotics

Qualcomm recently entered into a long-term agreement with Neura Robotics aimed at supporting advances in next-generation robotics that can work alongside humans in industrial, service and household environments.

Announcing the pact, Qualcomm explained the move combined its expertise in AI computing, connectivity and robotics platforms with its partner’s knowledge of specialist systems and embodied AI software.

It added they had a “shared goal of accelerating scalable, real-world robotic intelligence”.

Qualcomm noted “by aligning high-performance, power-efficient edge AI with full-stack robotic platforms” the partners aim to “help move robotics from research into production-ready deployment at scale”.

The pair will collaborate on so-called Brain + Nervous System reference architectures, which are set to combine high level perception, reasoning and planning, with ultra-low latency real time control. They also plan to work on related developer platforms and open ecosystems.

Neura Robotics is a specialist based in Germany. It designs and manufacturers robots of various form factors from industrial arms to humanoid machines.

Its founder and CEO David Reger described the tie-up with Qualcomm as a “major step toward making physical AI real: open, scalable and trusted”.

“By bringing together our cognitive robotics platforms and the Neuraverse ecosystem with Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership in edge AI and connectivity, we’re aiming to accelerate a future where cognitive robots operate safely alongside humans across industries and throughout everyday life”.
