Ericsson pitches 5G-Advanced Location Services

Ericsson is unveiling a new offering focused on providing 5G-Advanced Location Services. The services are designed to provide a major step in network-based positioning technology for enterprise and mission-critical use cases.

The Swedish vendor stated its suite of services is designed to redefine location-based services across commercial standalone (SA) 5G networks, with a release due at some point this quarter.

Ericsson explained it would embed positioning as a core SA 5G network capability, allowing service providers to monetise precise location services and expand traditional mobile offerings into verticals including manufacturing, healthcare, public safety, automotive, drones and more.

Key benefits outlined by Ericsson include: an accuracy level down to sub-metre for indoor and sub-10cm for outdoor positioning; scalable positioning for outdoor applications including in agriculture and automotive; unified 5G positioning technology for indoor and outdoor environments; no requirements for side apps; improved battery life compared with satellite alternatives; and backing for large scale use cases.

Monica Zethzon, head of Core Networks at Ericsson, said the launch of 5G-A Location Services helps to evolve the value of SA 5G. “This innovation gives CSPs the precision and scalability to create differentiated services based on location capabilities”.

Ericsson further noted the global market for 5G positioning is in its early stages, “but poised for rapid growth, driven by demand for enhanced precision in diverse sectors”.

Caroline Gabriel, partner at research group Analysys Mason, added the product “addresses critical pain points for operators and enterprises, particularly in sectors where location accuracy is mission critical”.
