Rewriting the Narrative: Leadership, AI, and the Rise of ‘Beautiful AI’ – Alice Change, Perfect Corp

Alice Chang, Founder and CEO, Perfect Corp, has penned an op-ed on International Women’s Day, to urge female leaders to not wait for a traditional path to appear, but instead be at the heart of building AI to ensure that it ultimately serves to empower and not exclude.

Alice Chang, Founder and CEO, Perfect Corp, talks about the importance of woman placing themselves at the heart of the global AI movement in an op-ed on International Women’s Day.

During my time in finance, my world revolved around numbers, balance sheets, risk management, and disciplined growth. Founding an artificial intelligence company was not the conventional next step. Yet today, as the founder and CEO of Perfect Corp., a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, I see that leap not as a departure from my past, but as an evolution of it.

My journey from CFO to AI entrepreneur reflects a broader shift taking place in technology leadership, one where diverse perspectives are no longer optional, but essential. For too long, the narrative around women in tech has focused on representation statistics rather than influence. The more important question is not simply how many women sit at the table, but how many are shaping the technologies that are redefining our world.

Today, artificial intelligence is transforming nearly every industry. But in few sectors is this transformation as personal, or as powerful, as in beauty and fashion.

Why Women Must Help Build AI

Women drive the majority of consumer purchasing decisions, particularly in beauty and fashion. Yet they remain underrepresented in AI development. Bridging this gap presents a powerful opportunity to build technology that better reflects and serves its audience.

Artificial intelligence learns from data and human inputs. When development teams lack diversity, blind spots can be embedded into products. In beauty, that can translate into limited shade matching, inaccurate diagnostics for different skin tones, or recommendation engines that reflect narrow standards.

Inclusive AI is both an ethical and commercial imperative. Technology must reflect the consumers it serves.

At Perfect Corp., we support more than 800 global brands through immersive AI and AR solutions. Our YouCam suite of apps, including YouCam Makeup, YouCam Perfect, YouCam Video, and YouCam AI Pro deliver interactive experiences directly to consumers. For brands and retailers, we provide advanced AI APIs and SDKs that seamlessly integrate virtual try-on, skin analysis, and personalization into e-commerce platforms and in-store environments.

More recently, we introduced the AI Beauty Agent, an intelligent, conversational assistant designed to guide consumers through personalized product discovery and recommendations. By combining generative AI with our proprietary beauty tech capabilities, the AI Beauty Agent creates a highly tailored and engaging shopping journey.

Representation at the leadership level influences how these solutions are conceived and built. When women participate in shaping AI, they help ensure it empowers rather than excludes.

The Tech Revolution Reshaping Beauty and Fashion

The beauty and fashion industries are undergoing a profound digital transformation. Consumers no longer follow a simple path from advertisement to store purchase. They discover products through social platforms, creator content, and digital-first brand experiences.

AI and augmented reality have redefined how consumers discover, try, and buy. Virtual try-on technology allows users to see makeup or accessories applied to their own image in real time. AI-powered skin diagnostics assess complexion and concerns within seconds. Intelligent recommendation engines provide tailored suggestions based on individual preferences and needs.

These innovations remove friction and build confidence. Beauty is deeply personal. Technology that reduces uncertainty and enables experimentation strengthens the connection between brands and consumers.

Across global markets, including the Middle East, demand for immersive and personalized retail continues to accelerate. The future of commerce is interactive, data-driven, and experience-led.

The Rise of Beautiful AI”

I often describe our vision as building “Beautiful AI.” This concept moves beyond efficiency and automation. It represents the intersection of artificial intelligence with personalization, creativity, and emotional connection.

In beauty and fashion, purchases are tied to self-expression. AI in this space must feel intuitive and human-centered. Beautiful AI celebrates individuality rather than standardizing it.

By combining advanced computer vision, machine learning, and generative AI, we enable hyper-personalized experiences at scale. A global brand can speak to millions of consumers as individuals. A user can explore new looks confidently, guided by intelligent insights tailored specifically to them.

The next chapter of AI will not be defined solely by speed or processing power. It will be defined by how seamlessly it enhances human creativity and confidence.

Lessons from Scaling a Tech Company

Building a tech startup into a publicly listed global company requires resilience and clarity of purpose.

First, long-term vision is essential. AI innovation demands sustained investment in research, infrastructure, and responsible data practices. Public markets add further accountability. Strong governance and transparency are fundamental to maintaining trust.

Second, talent and culture are decisive. Diverse teams challenge assumptions and produce stronger outcomes. In AI especially, varied perspectives directly influence product quality.

Third, adaptability is critical. Consumer expectations evolve quickly, and technology evolves even faster. Companies must continuously innovate while remaining anchored to a clear mission.

For women aspiring to leadership in technology, my message is simple. Do not wait for a traditional path to appear. Skills from finance, operations, marketing, or product can all translate into transformative leadership in AI.

International Women’s Day is a moment to recognize progress, but also to accelerate it. As AI becomes embedded in every aspect of commerce and culture, we must ensure it reflects the diversity of the world it serves.

The narrative around women in tech leadership is being rewritten. By building inclusive, human-centered AI and scaling responsibly, we can shape a future where innovation is not only intelligent, but truly beautiful.
