iPad trade-in rockets 500%

Trade-ins of old iPad models have increased 500 percent since Apple announced its iPad 4 and iPad mini.

The data comes from gadget recycling website SellMyMobile.com which suggests consumers are cashing in on old tablet models in order to upgrade easily. iPad trade-ins grew by 500 percent only a week after Apple announced the iPad mini and iPad 4 in October.

Colin White, MD for SellMyMobile, said: “Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people looking to recycle their old mobiles – particularly when a new handset is released. But whereas before people would hang on to their tablets longer, high profile launches like the Apple iPad, Google Nexus 10 and Microsoft Surface mean that we’re now seeing this trend move to the tablet industry.”

The most traded-in tablet is the iPad followed by the BlackBerry PlayBook and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Apple’s iPad accounts for 76 percent of the site’s tablet trade-ins. See also: Apple loses tablet market share to Android.

Users wishing to get the most out of a trade-in need to be on the ball. The iPad depreciates by an average of 3.2 percent per month with a product launch such as the iPad mini causing prices to plummet by 30 percent in the space of two weeks.
