Khalifa University researchers develop IoT devices for mobile health

Khalifa University researchers will present two demonstrations of Internet of Things (IoT) devices developed for mobile health at a one-day workshop for the UAE Society of Engineers (SoE) and UAE IEEE Society.

The researchers, who are involved in the collaborative Abu Dhabi – SRC (Semiconductor Research Corporation) Center of Excellence on Energy Efficient Electronic Systems (ACE4S), will conduct the presentation at the SoE premises in Dubai on 17 April.

Titled ‘IoT Platforms for Mobile Health’, the workshop will focus on IoT Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) platforms developed as part of the ACE4S involving five UAE universities, led by researchers from Khalifa University’s Main Campus and the Masdar City Campus (Masdar Institute). The event will be attended by expert faculty and industry professionals from across the UAE.

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Interim Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, said, “We are privileged to host this UAE IEEE Society workshop and demonstrate our innovations to peers and professionals. The healthcare sector remains one of the key strategic areas for the UAE and our research drive in technologies related to this sector will continue. We believe the workshop will not only facilitate knowledge sharing but also showcase our strength of expertise in healthcare related technologies, especially in IoT devices.”

The ACE4S team has developed new technologies aiming at innovative self-powered wireless sensing and monitoring IoT SoC platforms. The workshop will introduce the basic components of an IoT device including sensors, energy harvesting and power management, digital processors, machine learning and wireless radios.

Dr. Ibrahim Elfadel, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Dr. Mohammed Ismail Elnaggar, Professor and Electrical Engineering Department Chair, Wayne State University, Detroit, US, will give a presentation titled ‘Introduction to IoT Hardware’, while Dr. Baker Mohammad, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, will present on ‘Energy Harvesting and Power Management’. A presentation from Dr. Hani Saleh, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, will highlight ‘Artificial intelligence, System on Chip and Machine Learning’. Dr. Mihai Sanduleano, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, will address ‘Wireless Radio Transceivers for IoT Devices’.

The workshop will culminate with two presentations and demos on IoT platforms for Mobile Health. The first is by Dr Elnaggar and Dr. Mohammed Alhawari, Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and will focus on an IoT platform for predicting heart attacks, while the second will be given by Dr Elfadel, and will describe an IoT platform for detecting congestive heart failure.
