OpenAI recently unveiled plans to add a health tab to its ChatGPT AI platform. This new category with give users access to medical advice, and the ability to upload records and connect to related apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal.
The AI company stated it is introducing a dedicated health offering after observing wellbeing was one of the most common ways people use ChatGPT, with more than 230 million users globally asking related questions each week.
OpenAI explained ChatGPT Health was developed in consultation with 260 physicians over a two-year period as it seeks to enable users to take a more active role in understanding and managing their wellbeing, “while supporting, not replacing, care from clinicians”.
CEO of Applications Fidji Simo said AI does not have the constraints traditional healthcare processes may face. “Doctors don’t have enough time or bandwidth. They can’t spend as much time understanding everything about you and they don’t have time to explain what’s going on in a way you can understand”.
Privacy
The feature was built on privacy, security and data controls already in place across ChatGPT, with additional layered protections designed specifically for health.
These include encryption and isolation “to keep health conversations protected and compartmentalised”.
Users are able to connect their medical records, wellness apps and wearables “to ground conversations in your own health information, so responses are more relevant and useful to you”.
ChatGPT Health can be used to understand test results, prepare for doctor appointments, and access advice on diet and workout routines.
The service will be made available to all users on web and iOS in the coming weeks. Medical record integration will only be available in the U.S.
