X marks the spot: vivo X50 Pro

4.3 out of 5

Adelle Geronimo takes vivo’s latest flagship for a test drive and finds out why its innovative features make it a strong contender in the smartphone market.

For many smartphone users, especially the younger market, cameras are among the primary factors to consider when purchasing a device. To address this demand, many smartphone players have stepped up their game, introducing new camera innovations with every new iteration of their products. However, while others are adding more and more telephoto capabilities, vivo has taken it one step further.

First things first, the vivo X50 Pro is a sleek phone with a classic yet elegant design. vivo X50 Pro has a glass body that is curved on the sides. It is also very slim and lightweight, making it ergonomically perfect for comfortable extended usage. There are no buttons on the left side while the right side houses the volume rocker and the power button. Underneath the handset, you will find a USB Type-C port, the primary microphone, and a dual Nano SIM-card tray. It is also equipped with a secondary microphone, which can be found on the top of the device. However, it has no expandable storage via a microSD card.

The front boasts a vibrant 6.56-inch AMOLED display and a hole-punch cut-out that houses its front-facing camera. It has a resolution of 2376 x 1080px, and a pixel density of 398ppi. The display also supports HDR10+ and has a 90Hz refresh rate option, which delivers sharp and vivid colours, making it perfect for streaming video content and even playing graphic-rich games. Embedded underneath the lower section of the screen is the fingerprint sensor, which is very intuitive.

Flip it over and there is a matte frosted glass back. The unit we have is the Alpha Grey edition, which looks very clean and chic. The handset is available in two other colours – Frost Blue and Glaze Black. The back of the device also sports the quad-camera module. The camera bump is quite thick, making the phone wobble when placed on surfaces.

Now to the crème de la crème – the cameras. As mentioned, the vivo X50 Pro flaunts a quad rear camera set up, which includes a 48MP Sony IMX598 primary shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 13MP portrait lens and an 8MP telephoto lens that allows 60x hybrid zoom. The vivo X50 Pro captures clear and crisp images. There are minimal noises when taking photos in low-light conditions but overall the device produces balanced and impressive images.

Taking its smartphone camera game further, vivo has introduced a built-in Gimbal Camera System to the X50 Pro. It uses a double ball structure to achieve triple-axis rotation, ensuring three-dimensional stabilisation. The feature prevents blurry photos and shaky videos, allowing you to capture smooth, fast-action footages with the click of a button.

For selfie lovers, the smartphone’s front-facing camera also does not disappoint. You can expect bright and vibrant portraits on even when beauty mode is turned off.

Under the hood, the vivo X50 Pro runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. It runs FunTouch OS 10.5 on top of Android 10. It has a clean interface that’s easy to navigate. The device performed fluidly, making launching and switching applications seamless.

The vivo X50 Pro packs a 4,200mAh battery with 33W Vivo FlashCharge 2, which is fast and can power up the device in about an hour or less. The battery could last beyond a full day of normal usage, which involves using social media apps, emails, chat apps as well as a bit of video streaming and mobile gaming.

Finally, the device is equipped with a 5G Seamless Switch, which allows you to switch among four networks. This feature function between 5G and 4G networks is enabled in accordance with network usage to ensure superior Internet speed and power-saving.

Final thoughts

Its sleek design, impressive performance and awesome camera offerings make vivo X50 Pro a strong contender in the smartphone market. If you’re in the market for a new handset that’s packed with amazing features, the vivo X50 Pro could just be the right device for you.
